I "NeeD" That Record

Went out the other night to catch a showing of Brendan Toller's film "I Need That Record."

Not a bad little documentary that, among others, featured Glenn Branca, Mike Watt, Ian from Fugazi, and Thurston Moore. I was under the impression (from a source that I can't recall at the moment...) that my friend Todd from the great Low Yo Yo Stuff shop (formerly in Athens, now in Atlanta...) was in it, but he apparently didn't make this particular cut of the film if at all (DVD xtras???). From the titling at the beginning it appears that they still haven't settled on the final cut just yet.

Also went back to the new album by John Matthias, who was the guy who played violin on Radiohead's "The Bends". Super stuff...

Wolfgang Floyd

Got through the majority of yesterday's drudgery by rediscovering some early live Floyd at Wolfgang's Vault. You can find a lot of vids from the same show on YouTube, but since there's not much to the presentation this did just as nicely...and I finally figured out where that screech in Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2 comes from.

One last note on the Heatwave video below since my curiosity got the better of me. Rod Temperton, the guy on the keyboards who wrote that tune and all of their other hits, went on to ink "Thriller," and a bunch of other big tunes for MJ.

Oh and then there's this news out of Peel Acres.

Just finished this week's show which features an intvw with moderne country siren Laura Cantrell. She was nice enough to let me intrude on that most sacred part of any parent's day (naptime...), to tell us about her latest release, "Trains and Boats and Planes." I routinely check out her Radio Thriftshop show in order to get schooled on honky tonk new and old. I am longtime admirer of her theme song and am in deepest envy of her cool logo, of which I am sorely in need of.

Not as much as I seem to be in need of a daily dose off Colourmusic's new track, Yes! however. To me it smacks of the Beta Band, but my friend Sam thinks not. Speaking of which, their once and future frontman, Steve Mason has a new project called Black Affair. The last time I saw Steve he was sitting in a tiny trailer with the rest of the Betas just prior to a summer gig they did in Atlanta with Radiohead. Four Scotsman, limited A/C...the air was...um, not the freshest.

It's past 1AM in Athens, Georgia and the day's lingering humidity has forced me to abandon my smoke (Romeo y Julieta) to the outside ashtray and seek relief indoors where I'm researching an article I'm working up on Woodstock. The mother of all pop festivals will be staring down it's 40th anniversary next year and I'm looking for attendees and and performers to tell me their tales of mud, madness, and music.
